Niccolò Paganini

Niccolò Paganini (1782–1840), the Italian violinist and composer, redefined what the instrument could do. His 24 Caprices — above all the famous No. 24 — remain a summit of violin technique, inspiring composers from Liszt to Rachmaninoff. His performances were so astonishing that rumours of supernatural pacts followed him everywhere. Paganini was also a showman who reshaped the idea of the virtuoso.
